2025/2026

Precarious Home 'detail' (2026) - mixed media, building materials.

40 tiles of varying size will be part of a precarious homelike structure to illustrate and explore the theme of female homelessness. Using large scale building materials I will explore the fragile qualities of the home through a series of objects, materials  and text to create an immersive installation for the West Dean Summer Show 2026.

Skins of the building (2026) - rubble, finishing plaster, vintage wallpaper.

Examining the nature of home and its meaning through the fabric of brick and rubble. Finishing plaster with its skin like qualities layered on the rough rubble soothing and softening its original state , in contrast with a palimpsest of vintage wallpapers to denote home decor and a traditional 'feminine touch' to the shelter we inherently seek.

  1. Our Traces Here  (2026) - found materials, mixed media.

Found material from derelict buildings layered onto board to create a dilapidated, decaying sense of structure, walls flaking, insecure, unsafe traces of past lives and individuals who lived amongst the shelters.

2. Vulnerable  Dwellings (2026) - found materials, mixed media.

War, famine, migration, societal failure an endless list of why shelter and home is not an option for so many. These works present as open, unsafe phantom like structures. In the mind or in reality they are the intangible.  and ruined.

2025

Maintenance Labour (2025) - silk screen prints from original photographs.

Inspired by Victorian Photography of Eadweard Muybridge  these works situate the artist in various poses of maintenance labour, confined and repetitive and in mono print to echo the endless monotonous cycles of domestic labour.

Maintenance Labour (2025) - black / white film.

Performance based film examining the hidden labour and physicality of domestic tasks. A metronome keeps pace with the embodied labour in a cycle of small acts and a defiant end.

If no one sees or hears her perform the actions of maintenance labour does she become inconsequential and invisible?

All quiet below stairs (2025) - found linen and lithographic print montage.

Beautiful hand darned vintage cloths from a kitchen spoke of the scullery maid tasked to make do and mend below stairs. Her delicate work so very present in the discarded found items. The printed images  are of West Dean servants from the 1800 in ghost like negative representation.

Female maintenance labour is on the up (2025) - shadow box, mixed media assemblage.

A shadow box surrounded by mirrors that denotes the infinite cycle of female labour. recent statistics showing that the percentage of house work carried out by women has increased over the last few years. The vinatge Barograph paper would measure air pressure and seemed synonymous with the pressure to 'keep house'.

Embodied Marigold (2025) - mixed media.

When the gloves are off the task is still at hand. The sculpture is a mould not of the hand but the embodied hand still within the glove. There is no escape from the labours.

Run, Dash, Scurry (2025) - mixed media, a response to a servants call bell system.

This box assemblage was made in response to the servants call bell system found in many grand houses and also at West Dean. It represented the meeting point between above and below stairs - the object and sound that had to be obeyed, the reaction swift and the the task to serve those above.
